Updated: Apr 12

Bio-stimulator treatments have gained popularity as effective options for skin rejuvenation and volume restoration without the use of traditional fillers. Among the leading choices are Profhilo Structura, Radiesse, and Sculptra. Each offers unique benefits and mechanisms to stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and restore youthful contours. This post breaks down how these treatments work, their differences, and what to expect from each.

What Are Bio-stimulator Treatments?

Bio-stimulators are injectable products designed to encourage the body’s natural collagen production. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that add immediate volume by physically filling wrinkles or folds, bio-stimulators work gradually by triggering fibroblasts to produce new collagen. This process improves skin elasticity, firmness, and overall texture over time.

These treatments are popular for patients seeking subtle, natural-looking results that develop progressively and last longer than typical hyaluronic acid fillers. They are often used for facial areas showing signs of ageing, such as cheeks, jawline, and temples, as well as for skin quality improvement.

1) Profhilo Structura: Hydrating and Glow

Profhilo Structura is a bio-remodeller that combines hyaluronic acid with a unique formulation designed to provide both hydration and volume. It contains a high concentration of stabilised hyaluronic acid, which spreads easily under the skin to improve moisture retention and skin texture.

  • How it works: Profhilo Structura stimulates collagen and elastin production while delivering intense hydration. Its gel-like consistency allows it to act as a scaffold, supporting tissue structure.

  • Best for: Patients looking for mild to moderate volume restoration combined with skin tightening and hydration.

  • Treatment areas: Face only.

  • Results timeline: Noticeable improvements in skin texture and firmness appear within 4 to 6 weeks, with effects lasting 6-9 months.

  • How many sessions: 2 sessions are the typical protocol. 3 sessions may be used for more advanced tissue laxity or fat pad support

  • How often:  4-6 weeks apart

  • Quantity per session: 1 syringe for mild volume loss, 2 syringes for moderate volume loss

  • Side effects: Mild swelling, redness, and the possibility of small bruising.

Profhilo Structura stands out for its dual action of lifting and moisturising, making it a good choice for those with early signs of skin laxity who want a natural glow alongside subtle volume.

2) Radiesse Hyperdilute: Firming and Contouring

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite-based product, and when hyperdiluted, acts primarily as a bio-stimulator rather than a volumizer, which spreads evenly under the skin.

  • How it works: The calcium microspheres stimulate collagen production and improve skin quality and firmness without adding significant volume.

  • Best for: Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who want firmer, tighter skin rather than immediate volume.

  • Treatment areas: Cheeks, temples, jawline, neck, decolletage, hands, and other areas with volume loss, including on the body.

  • Results timeline: You may notice subtle improvement in hydration, firmness and texture within 6 weeks. Collagen stimulation begins within weeks and is visible around 3-4 months. Effects can last 12 to 18 months.

  • How many sessions: 1-2 sessions for mild–moderate volume loss. 2 sessions + for more significant laxity or hollowing

  • How often:  6-12 weeks apart

  • Quantity per session: 1 syringe for mild volume loss, 2 syringes for moderate volume loss

  • Side effects: Mild swelling, redness, and the possibility of small bruising.

Radiesse hyperdilute is especially effective for improving skin texture and firmness over larger areas, making it a versatile option beyond the face.

3) Sculptra: Deep Collagen Stimulation

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production deep within the skin. It is known for its gradual and long-lasting effects.

  • How it works: Sculptra triggers fibroblasts to produce new collagen over several months, restoring volume and improving skin thickness.

  • Best for: Patients with moderate to severe volume loss or skin thinning who want a natural, gradual restoration.

  • Treatment areas: Cheeks, temples, jawline, neck, decolletage, hands, and other areas with volume loss, including on the body.

  • Results timeline: Results develop slowly, typically over 3 to 6 months, with effects lasting up to 2 years, and sometimes longer

  • How many sessions: 2 sessions for mild–moderate volume loss. 3 sessions + for more significant laxity or hollowing.

  • How often:  6-8 weeks apart

  • Quantity per session: 1 vial for mild volume loss, 2 vials for moderate volume loss

  • Side effects: Mild swelling, redness, and the possibility of small bruising.

Sculptra is ideal for those who prefer a slow, natural build-up of volume and skin quality improvement, with longer-lasting results.

Choosing the Right Treatment

Selecting the best bio-stimulator depends on your skin condition, goals, and tolerance for gradual results.

  • Choose Profhilo Structura if you want a combination of hydration and mild volume, with quicker visible results.

  • Opt for Radiesse hyperdilute if your main concern is volume restoration, but you want quicker results.

  • Consider Sculptra if you need significant volume restoration and are comfortable with a slower, gradual improvement process.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

Upon booking, you will be required to complete our medical questionnaire to check your suitability for the treatment.

Treatment on the day includes a consultation to determine your goals and target areas, and treatment time typically lasts 30 to 50 minutes. All three treatments involve injections with fine needles or blunt-tipped cannulas. It can feel a little uncomfortable; however the product is mixed with lidocaine to reduce the discomfort. If you would rather not have lidocaine, please inform us at the time of booking (not on the day) as the product needs to be prepped a little in advance of your treatment.

After treatment, mild redness, swelling, or bruising can occur but usually resolves quickly. Patients can resume normal activities relatively soon, but should avoid intense exercise or heat exposure for 24-48 hours. Avoid extreme temperatures for 2 weeks (ie saunas and temperatures below 0 degrees). You will need to follow the guidance that you will be given regarding the daily massage of the treatment area.

Multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.
